GPU Renders in Black
-
When I render using the processor -- everything is fine. When I select Nvidia 1080 -- everything is pitch black.
I used the suggested settings of pixel samples = 20 and branch path tracing = deselect.
Even when I use branch path tracing = on and pixel samples = 3, gpu rendering shows only black screen. Thanks for any advice you might offer!

This is most likely a driver problem.
Look at this thread.
Jura's post tells you which driver works best in P11

Hi wimvdb ... am installing the older 2015 CUDA 7 toolkit. Perhaps that will do the trick.

@ghostship Thanks Ghostship! Am downloading 373.06.

Yes, I meant that thread. Forgot to post the link itself
Thanks

@wimvdb @ghostship Well, last night ended differently than I had hoped. After installing 373.06, my computer monitor started blinking--slight system freezing. I would then receive a message that the graphics card had experienced an error and had recovered. However, when I rotated a brick wall in Poser, the system froze, this time for good. Hard re-boot. Now the computer won't boot at all -- not visually. It won't even reach the Dell splash screen. I removed the 1080 and replaced it with my old gtx 570. Still the same result.
I'm hoping that I can remove the hard drive, plug it into my laptop, delete the driver, re-insert it and start fresh with a different driver. I'm really hoping this is a software problem and not a hardware problem.

@blazoneer Sorry to hear that. I hope you get it sorted out. :)

The graphics card error was most likely a video time out. This sometimes happens when the GPU has a long calculation and does not report back to the OS in time. The default setting is too low for GPU rendering.
There are many articles on that, google for GPU and TDRDelay.
Here is one of them: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-hardware/windows-10-display-driver-has-stopped-responding/5caff7ea-bed5-4111-baac-e72d32d4dbe2
Usually you only need to set TDRDelay (10 secs of higher)This however is a different problem from your system no longer starting up.
One thing which you should at least try is to turn the computer completely Off (Shutdown), then wait a few minutes (like 10-15) and restart the computer. This will make sure that the videocard itself is completely reset. Restart does not do that.I hope you get that fixed

Well, I cannot get the computer running. Returned the 1080 and the new monitor and exchanged both for a laptop with a 1060 in it -- not the performance I was originally hoping for, but it's a nice laptop, and the renders in Poser now work using the GPU. Pretty fast -- not blazingly. And this newer I7 cpu seems a little faster than my now defunct T7500 dual xeon 5570 cpus. Time to get to work! Thanks all for the suggestions. Maybe I'll take the computer in and see if a tech can give me an estimate on getting it running again.

@blazoneer
For best performance on GPU set the bucketsize to 256 or higher
Compared to 64 it will at least the double speed

This is very strange in my view, this has never happened to me, I would suspect PSU as first because drivers shouldn't cause PC not starting, did you plugged both PCI_E power cables?
Check cables if they connected on motherboard etc, you can try to check if PSU is indeed dead via simple paper clip and fan,my last Corsair PSU has failed after 4 months of use
With Pascal GPU you need to use 373.06 and personally I use 512 bucket size and try to render with deselected progressive rendering as will be faster and will use GPU bit more than with progressive selected
Regarding TDR try this little program

Hope this helps
