I keep getting these dark splotches on my mesh
As far as I can see it only happens in preview mode. And doesn't seem to matter if it's in Sreed or Open GL. I don't think it's a case of reversed normals. Any ideas?

That is usually something in the winding of the object that causes that.
Does it have any duplicates in it?
You can try to turn down the Crease Angle. But if it doesn't show in the render I wouldn't worry about it. Lots of models have it without problems in the render.
Well, it does seem to render okay.
Scott, not sure what you mean by winding of the object. No duplicates or vertices doubles.
It almost looks like a shadow from the lamp. What happens if you remove the lamp from the wall and just render the wall?
