somewhat OT Blue Ray burners for backups?
-
I just built a new computer and was thinking again about adding a BRD to backup files and possibly watch movies on my computer. If you got one, what's your thoughts on these? What should I look for when buying one? Any out there tat I should avoid?

I recently started using br disks for permanent archives. Specifically I use m-Disc. They are a little more expensive but are supposed to last for 1000 yrs. But this is only for Archive after I finish a project to keep all the files in case I ever need to go back. For my computer and poser stuff I just use a regular back up (time machine). I have been thinking about getting a second drive just as an extra drive for poser library (paranoid 3rd copy) which is 130 GB. because I could not imagine ever having to re-download all that stuff even if I could find it all. For video I just rip all my BD and dvd onto an external HDD to watch movies.

@david_macrae I have handbrake and added the mod so I can rip encrypted DVD movies. What are you using to rip BR?

same handbrake. one of the best apps ever. I usually use command line tools and rip from dvd not blueray but there is one good program I know of to decrypt bluray is called makemkv.

Oh and I always play video in VLC player. i don't use itunes for my videos.

@david_macrae Just doing more research. You might read this article pertaining to M-Disc BD-R. Seems that they are the same thing as regular BD-R.
