New to poser, must have screwed some settings up?
I just stated playing with Poser and decided to download a Tutorial.
However, not even the first thing seems to work :(
When pulling on an arm with the 'Translate/Pull' tool, the arm just disconnects and floats away in stead of pulling the entire figure with it as in the demo.
Did I inadvertently change some settings? Or am I missing some other basic thing?
OK, several questions need to be answered first before we can help:
What version of Poser are you using?
What figure are you trying to use?
What tutorial are you using?
Do you have Inverse Kinematics turned on or off?
Thanks for the quick reply.

@allart OK, sorry, but I've never used Andy except to remove him from the default scene and change the preferences.
Try turning IK on the arms and see if that resolves your problem.
Short of that, try the video with a different figure from the Poser library.
I just tried with Alyson and I can use the translate/pull to move her arm and upper body follows.
LOl. I can see why you want to get rid of him ;-)
I tried the same with Alyson, with all IK turned on.
Still, I get this result when I use the Translate tool to pull upwards on the arm:
I even tried removing Poser all together, including the preference folder and re-install it...
And this is what I get when using Alyson and Alyson2 Casual
@Glitterati3D OK... so whatever happens on my side is not what it is supposed to be...
I'll give their customer support a try then. Thanks for your help.
@allart Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. I'm sure someone will come along that might have ideas, so don't abandon this thread quite yet.
I have attached some screen shots that may be of some help. Try using your parameter dials instead of using direct movement.
@ccartwright All this is excellent information, but the OP is trying to follow a tutorial.
@ccartwright Thanks for the detailed screens. And they definitely help, just as the Direct Manipulation tool does.
What I'm trying to find out is why one of the main tools (Translate/Pull) is not working as it should. It has this strange behaviour on all kind of models.
So sorry, I thought you were trying to figure our how to move the figures body parts.
@ccartwright If I look at your last screen, the effect that you get by using the Trans Dials is what I get when using the Translate/Pull tool. Is it possible that those got mixed up somehow? I haven't seen a setting for that, but there are so many...
No I do not think they got mixed up, The Translate/Pull tool does just that..it will "pull" the selected section of the figure/object.
Yet, if you look at the first two pictures in this thread, you see two different results from the same 'pulling' on an arm...
The 1st one is what happens when I do it.
The 2nd one is what happens when others do it (including the SmithMicro video tutorial). It looks like somehow in my case Poser has forgotten that moving the arm also needs to move some attached body parts...

@allart something is definitely not right with your software. Translate/pull tool used on Andy's hand, for example, should just yank his arm down along with his torso as you would expect a human figure to move. Sounds like something needs to be re-loaded or you might want to make sure you have the latest version of Poser. 11.06.33735 is the latest I believe.
Hmmm...Under Figure>Use Inverse Kinematics> Left Hand and Right Hand should be "Unchecked"
If they are Checked..you will get some warped movements using the Translate/Pull tool.
