spam in Motion Artist forum ?!

  • @fonpaolo The more than likely don't have any sites. And they are using our own computers against us. They can link them all together to put out millions of spam emails, posts on forums, bbs sites... you name it. And it's all from sites we visit and cookies...

I'd almost believe that Rokket, except none of them are written in English, so how could we know for sure how they're finding "where we visit". If you can actually read what they're saying, we "might" be able to determine where, and how, they're finding such information.

Website cookies have always been the culprit in one instance or another, but I just can't imagine which site's cookies has brought this on here on the SM forums.

This is yet another reason why I haven't used Google as my search engine for years.

  • Can't the forum just ban their IP number? Get rid of one account and all they do is create another one. Banning the IP number would just swat that fly all together, wouldn't it?

  • I highly doubt they've found any information from us or whoever.
Since I experienced the same kind of spam in other forums, they're doing it randomly trying to find a "good place" where to spread their "fabulous" advertising.

...and as eclark1849 said, SM: do you block their IP, don't you?
In my experience it's the only way to block them, at least for a while.

Many spammers use a cell connection, and sadly that changes far to often for ip banning to be effective.

  • @shvrdavid I was going to say the same thing. Plus they can use bots to do all the work, so they are coming from possibly hundreds of different IP's. It just creates work for the mods.

@Miss-B Just because it's in Korean doesn't mean they can decipher our data. It's not necessarily the people who visit this page that brought them here. They spam all sorts of forums. All they need to do it create a fake account and spam away. If it gets banned, they can create another.

How many times have you seen a spam email from yourself in your email account?

  • @rokketman I've never seen that. That would be weird.

  • @eclark1849 I've seen it a lot in my gmail account. But I hardly ever use it, and it is google...

I have the same Yahoo account I set up in 1995. It's pretty stable now. I don't get too many spam message in there. Only from the "CANDIAN PHARMCY" wanting to sell me Viagra...

Not in ages, but I saw a spam email from a good friend a number of years ago which, unfortunately, I opened while at work. Forgetaboutit, and I wasn't the only one in the firm that got hit, though the other spam mail came from different sources. What a mess our IT dept. had getting it cleaned up. I couldn't use my computer for the rest of the day. ~shakes head~

Needless to say, that was far worse than just plain spam mail, but that's what it looked like to me when I initially opened it. Turned out my friend's email had gotten hacked, and everyone in her Address Book got hit.

  • @Miss-B One of my old email accounts was hacked and used to send spam. It was one I had stopped using. I didn't even know about it until one of the recipients of the spam called me and asked what I was sending. There were only a couple people in that address book, though and were people I had all but stopped communicating with. Once I realized what had happened, I contacted Yahoo and had them delete the account.
