  • SIGGRAPH 2018 TO DEBUT IMMERSIVE PAVILION WITH VRCADE AND VILLAGE
    Renderosity Magazine -by -gToon

SIGGRAPH 2018, the world’s leading annual interdisciplinary educational event showcasing the latest in computer graphics and interactive techniques, has announced information about this year’s Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality program. The 45th SIGGRAPH conference will take place 12–16 August at the Vancouver Convention Centre. To register for the conference, visit s2018.SIGGRAPH.org.
As virtual reality (VR) expands into the consumer market, and augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) get ready for prime time, SIGGRAPH 2018 stands as a prime place for these emerging media and experiences to offer a glimpse into the future from innovators around the globe. Cementing its status at the cutting-edge, SIGGRAPH 2018 will feature a brand-new space: the Immersive Pavilion. The Pavilion is devoted exclusively to these three mediums and will contain: the Vrcade, a space for VR, AR, and MR games or experiences; the well-known Village, for showcasing large-scale projects; and the VR Theater, a storytelling extravaganza that is part of the Computer Animation Festival.
“We are so excited about the new Immersive Pavilion — it will instantly become the place for our attendees to experience, play, and learn about the latest technological advances across all areas of these rapidly emerging media platforms,” said SIGGRAPH 2018 Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality Chair Pol Jeremias. “This year’s VR and mixed reality offerings will include innovative experiments, research, games, music videos, and more that are focused on the exploding and immersive interactive experience.”

  • Microsoft Kinect Refuses to Die
    by Alex Cranz

Microsoft announced the return of the Kinect on Monday at Build, its annual developer conference in Seattle. And its new iteration as a tool for developers powered by a more sophisticated camera module and Microsoft’s cloud-based AI technology might actually push Kinect over the hump to make it useful to a whole new generation of hackers and tinkerers.

“I think one of the things that is beginning to be understood is that Kinect was never really just the gaming peripheral,” Microsoft Director of Communications Greg Sullivan told Gizmodo at Build. “It was always more.”

  • Computer graphics research team to present new tool for sketching faces

Flexible image editing technique to be presented at SIGGRAPH 2018

Computer scientists have devised a sketch-based editing framework that enables a user to edit their photos by sketching a few strokes on top of them.

Faceshop consists of a web-based user interface that enables a user to specify a region to be edited. Moreover, the user can draw strokes and color scribbles to guide the editing process. The core of the back end is a deep image completion network that takes the user input and the original image to synthesize the edited result.

Across popular social media platforms, users are posting countless images every day. On Instagram alone, there are more than 40 billion uploaded photos -- a figure that's skyrocketing by 95 million daily. This presents a clear need for intuitive yet robust photo-editing tools that allow the average user to perform advanced editing functions.

  • Smith Micro named 'Leading Player' in Growing IoT Device Management Market

According to Transparency Market Research, the global IoT (Internet of Things) Device Management market will continue to grow at a brisk pace in the foreseeable future as the growing need for new data monitoring mechanisms across all sectors will spur demand for effective and secure device management solutions. Smith Micro was cited as a 'leading player' in this growing market along with tech giants Google, Intel, IBM, Oracle, SAP and Microsoft. Smith Micro's solution, the QuickLink IoT Services Platform provides comprehensive and standards-based device management and firmware over-the-air update capabilities.

  • Shh, Your Phone May Be Listening!

It surely says something about the dark side of technology that as time goes on, many of us are increasingly likely to believe the worst of what’s alleged about our devices. That we’re being used, manipulated, spied on, listened to, watched, taken advantage of in service of selling ads — even if evidence is presented to the contrary.

Some academics at Northeastern University recently set out to look into one such long-held assumption, the zombie conspiracy which no one ever seems to be able to kill over whether our phones are secretly listening to us to know which ads to present to us. A conspiracy that no less than Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg tried to swat down himself when he was grilled by Congress earlier this year.

What the researchers found: Your phone probably isn’t spying you. At least, not like that.

    Hi Earl,
The ONLY useful button on a smartphone/tablet is the OFF button.

When we where young, we had a life, we played, ran, biked, teased the streets. LOL.
Now kids have a smartphone/tablet and grow fat by the minute.

  • Best graphic design software of 2018
    By Mark Pickavance

The problem that designers face every day is that of unending revision. Perhaps something needs adding, removing, recolouring or de-emphasising. The permutations on how a piece of artwork can be subtly different are as infinite as the reasons for altering it.

Recreating physical artwork with minor differences is time-consuming and costly, whereas in the digital realm it can be quick, cheap and repeatable.

Using a graphics design application means colours and elements can be changed, removed or redesigned rapidly without a complete rework. That allows for the expansion of design options, providing wider variation and additional time that can be allocated to the creative process rather than being consumed by the practicalities of making artwork.

  • Making computer animation more agile, acrobatic -- and realistic

From martial arts to break dancing, deep reinforcement learning provides realistic simulations
Animation in film and video games is hard to make realistic: each action typically requires creating a separate controller, while deep reinforcement learning has yet to generate realistic human or animal motion. Computer scientists have now developed an algorithm that uses reinforcement learning to generate realistic simulations that can even recover realistically, after tripping, for example. The same algorithm works for 25 acrobatic and dance tricks, with one month of learning per skill.

  • Tech stocks set to crater on Thursday with Facebook on track for biggest drop ever
    John Melloy | @johnmelloy

The tech-heavy Nasdaq was set for a big down day Thursday after disappointing quarterly results from Facebook sent the social media giant hurtling toward its biggest share price decline ever and on track to lose more than $125 billion in market value.

The Invesco QQQ Trust, which tracks the Nasdaq 100 index and can give traders a good idea of how the Nasdaq stocks will trade, was down more than 2 percent at one point in after-hours trading Wednesday. At last count, the ETF was off by about 1.5 percent. Nasdaq futures opened lower Wednesday evening, off by about 0.8 percent. Facebook lost more than a fifth of its value after hours.

Big technology stocks other than Facebook felt the collateral damage as investors fled the sector. Apple lost about 1 percent. Facebook's "FANG" brethren were also lower.

Maybe with all that success they could give the Poser team some funding. If Poser succeeds, even if it's niche, it still helps out SM in the end.

  • @johndoe641 unless they've achieved that ranking by assigning an IP address to every individual bug in every Poser installation [NO!! Bad hand! Even IPV6 doesn't have that many addresses! No!] ;-)
